MOAL/SAEP COVID 19 RESPONSE INITIATIVE
The Climate Smart Agriculture and Rural Enterprise Programme (SAEP) have collaborated with the Ministry of Agriculture and Lands (MOAL) to provide support to the Ministry’s COVID-19 Mitigation and Response Plan. This initiative will focus on the following areas:
- Establishment of 500 backyard gardens within rural communities
- Provision of technical/handholding support by the MOAL Extension Staff and SAEP’s Extension/Fisheries Assistants
- Provision of material support consisting of planting materials and basic hand tools and equipment
- Promotion of nutritious eating for obtaining a healthy lifestyle
To facilitate the education and promotion of nutrition and healthy eating, the SAEP engaged the Grenada Food and Nutrition Council (GFNC) to implement a three (3) days training targeting the SAEP’s Extension and Fisheries Assistants as well as the selected MOAL Extension staff. This training was held from August 12th -14th, 2020 and provided participants with concise nutrition and meal planning information on the use of selected crops provided in the COVID-19 Backyard Kit. A total of 22 extension staff (SAEP: 12 and MOAL: 10) received the training. It is the intension that this information will then be disseminated with beneficiaries receiving support through the Initiative.
